Musky America Magazine August 2022 Edition

Oh yes, one other thing. Musky will hit short and miss a surface lure that generates noise during the retrieve. One would think that even if the Musky couldn't see the lure that the sound would bring him to it. Keep in mind that water disperses sound and makes it difficult to get a directional fix. Also, the lure is moving and, so is the Musky. Picture yourself in a room where you are picking up ball bearing that are rolling on the floor. Suddenly, the lights go out and you can no longer see the ball bearings but you can hear them rolling on the floor. Depending on how important it is for you to pick up those ball bearing, you may try to blindly reach out for them, however, it is more likely that you will just wait until the lights come back on and you can see them once more before attempting to pick them up. The Musky, without being able to see the lure he was chasing, even though he may hear it, is likely to take a swipe blindly or just turn off to locate a meal he can see. This accounts for those short hits and lapses in attention.
